In Bombay, the street is home to its inhabitants: Those who remain stationed, those who despite besieged were able to run away, those who keep continually coming back. In this documentary we discover moments of the daily life of Bombay during a twenty-four hour period: dawn, morning, afternoon, dusk, night and daybreak again. Sequences of pictures in time lapse, together with street sounds, represent scenes of the daily life.
First were the fishermen. Then, the Portuguese called the place Bom Bahia and among other names, “Good Life”. Today Bombay is Mumbai, an unintended city that grew by commercial and industrial impulses, reflecting in its geography a complex mosaic of the human existence.With a 17 million population and a daily immigration of 500 Indian families, this city established itself as the work core of economy dynamicity of the whole country of India.
Four months shooting…try to understand the city’s routines and rituals and to feel its physical metamorphosis. To go from there to the “street”, its inhabitants and to the most revealing aspect of its social and urban structure: the migration. Shot with a photographic camera and composed by 11 000 stills, this film is a representation of this city from a visitor’s external point of view. I intended to withdraw a pictorial impression of the city, through actions, colours, sounds, the undying witnesses of a human presence as effective as anonymous.

Em Bombaim a rua é a casa dos seus habitantes: os inactivos, os que apesar de cercados tentam fugir, os que continuam a voltar. Neste documentário descobrimos as cenas da vida diária de Bombaim ao longo de um período de vinte e quatro horas: madrugada, manhã, tarde, anoitecer, noite e novamente o amanhecer. Sequências de fotografia em time lapse, acompanhadas de som ambiente, retratam cenas do quotidiano de Mumbai e seus habitantes.
Primeiro foram os pescadores. Depois vieram os portugueses e deram-lhe o nome de Bom Bahia e, entre outros nomes, Boa Vida. Hoje Bombaim é Mumbai, cidade não planeada, que foi crescendo por impulsos de carácter comercial e industrial, e que espelha na sua geografia um complexo mosaico da existência humana. Com uma população de 17 milhões e uma imigração diária de 500 famílias, esta cidade estabeleceu-se como núcleo de trabalho e pólo de dinamização da economia de toda a Índia.
4 meses a filmar…Tentar compreender os hábitos e rituais da cidade, para sentir a metamorfose física enquanto urbe. Para daí partir para a “rua”, para os seus habitantes e para o aspecto mais relevante da sua estruturação sócio-urbana: a migração. Através de uma máquina fotográfica, e composto por 11 000 fotografias, este filme é uma representação da cidade de um ponto de vista exterior enquanto visitante… Uma impressão pictórica através de acções, cores, sons, testemunhas perenes de uma presença humana tão efectiva quanto anónima.
